Can motorcycle helmets with ECE 22.05 still be sold?

The introduction of the new ECE 22.06 standard for motorbike helmets is unsettling many motorcyclists and there is also a lack of clarity online. Many sites are falsely spreading the rumour that motorbike helmets with the ECE 22.05 standard will no longer be allowed to be sold from 2024, or that old helmets will have to be replaced. Read below to find out what the ECE standard is all about, how standards are issued and what will change with the latest 22.06 standard.

Which standards apply to motorbike helmets?

In 1990, the then applicable DIN 4848 standard for motorbike helmets in Germany was replaced by the ECE 22 regulation (ECE = Economic Commission for Europe). Due to changing safety requirements and technological advances, the fifth version (ECE-R 22.05) was introduced in 2002. The latest version, ECE-R 22.06, which extends the test procedure, has been in force since 2021.

What is tested in the standard for motorbike helmets?

The ECE test covers various aspects, such as testing the shock absorption, rotation measurement, load capacity and function of the chin strap, scuff test, stiffness of the motorbike helmets, shape and size, size of the field of vision as well as optical and mechanical tests of the visors.

Why is there a new standard?

ECE Regulation 22.05 was the standard for almost 20 years. During this time, both road safety requirements and scientific findings have developed considerably. New aspects such as rotational forces in accidents and more advanced materials have been taken into account. Points of criticism of the old standard included the predefined 5 shock absorption points and the prescribed temperatures of -20°C and +50°C for the tests.

What does the new standard change?

The ECE-R 22.06 standard for motorbike helmets contains more shock absorption test points than its predecessor. The test procedure has been changed slightly and the helmets are tested for resilience under higher impact speeds in some cases. The low-temperature tests now also take place at -10°C. The most significant change is the introduction of the rotation test.
Helmets with accessories must be tested to ensure that the additional equipment has no detrimental effects and that the helmet and/or visor still fulfil all requirements.

Do i have to buy a new motorcycle helmet with ECE-R 22.06 standard?

No, the new ECE 22.06 standard does not change anything for motorcyclists. Anyone who already owns a helmet certified to the old standard may continue to wear it.

Is it compulsory to wear an ECE-approved motorcycle helmet in Germany?

Yes, motorcyclists must wear a ‘suitable safety helmet’ according to § 21a StVO. Helmets that have been type-approved in accordance with ECE regulation 22.05 or 22.06 fulfil these requirements.
Please note that different and stricter regulations may apply abroad. It is advisable to find out about the regional regulations before travelling. A helmet with the appropriate ECE 22 labelling is recommended, as non-compliance may result in fines or a driving ban.

How do I recognise whether a helmet complies with the ECE standard?

A helmet with ECE approval has a test mark. The ‘E’ in a circle indicates that the helmet has been awarded the test standard. This test mark can be found on a patch, on the chin strap or on the inner lining of the helmet. In addition, there is often a sticker on the back of the helmet shell with the corresponding ECE marking, e.g. ‘E1 061401/J-1952’. This indicates that the helmet has undergone the testing process and met the required standards.
